SHILLONG: The recent landslide that blocked the Manipur-Silchar-Meghalya Highway has brought about a narcotics drought-like scene in Shillong. This has led to a shortage of such narcotics in Shillong thereby leading to the sudden rise in the prices charged by the drug peddlers. A senior member of the Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) has said that desperate drug users are ready to shell out Rs 600 to 700 that would have cost Rs 300 under normal circumstances.

The Sentinel also carried out its own investigation in some of the known joints where petty peddlers carry out their trade, and found that drug users rush to a peddler the moment he/she is sighted. The exchange between the buyer and the peddler is carried out quite swiftly.

The Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Claudi Lyngwa stated, “The recent landslide in the transit route toward our State has brought about a drought-like situation in the domestic market of narcotics here.” He added, “Our recent raids have also added to the woes of the drug syndicates.” In the past two to three months, around 3 kg of contraband worth around Rs 10 to 12 crores were seized by the East Khasi Hills Police.
