SHILLONG: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has sent a petition to the Assam Chief Secretary, requesting prompt action to avoid a potential traffic blockade along the Meghalaya-Assam highway.

According to reports, the right-wing Kutumba Suraksha Parishad organised this roadblock in response to the ongoing Mawjymbuiñ issue, which has increased regional tensions.

HITO voiced serious concerns about the possible consequences of such a blockade, cautioning that it would disturb the harmony and peaceful coexistence of local populations.

The organisation highlighted that traditional methods, especially the Dorbar Shnong, the Hynñiewtrep people's indigenous government council, must be used to resolve the Mawjymbuiñ issue.

The Dorbar Shnong has traditionally been the supreme body for resolving conflicts and maintaining peace among the Khasi communities, according to HITO.

The association also emphasised the importance of the Khasi States' Instrument of Accession (IOA), which upholds the rights of the Hynñiewtrep people over their ancestral territories.

HITO maintains that the resolution of the Mawjymbuiñ issue must be guided by these legal and traditional foundations.

HITO said in their appeal that permitting the road blockade to continue could lead to violence and instability, especially in Shillong, which is home to a sizable number of Hindu non-tribal citizens.

To stop the situation from worsening and turning into a larger clash, the group urged the Assam government to act swiftly.

In order to guarantee the safety and security of every community in the area, HITO emphasised the necessity of swift and decisive action.

The appeal emphasises how delicately interstate relations are balanced and how crucial it is to uphold traditional government structures in order to maintain peace in the area.
