Shillong: According to the latest reports, a total of three panels have been formed by the Governor of Meghalaya, Satya Pal Malik. The reason for the formation of these three regional committees is to examine the status of six disputed areas that are located along the inter-state Assam-Meghalaya border.
Each of the 3 regional panels will be headed by a Cabinet Minister of Meghalaya as per the statements of an official.
The members of the panels have also been instructed by the Meghalaya Governor to engage in discussions with the land dispute committees that have been set up in Assam.
The claims and counterclaims of the two states can be verified by the committees during the discussions, as per the instructions of the Governor of Meghalaya.
The disputed land located in the inter-state border includes Tarabari, Gizang and Hahim in West Khasi Hills district, Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills and Boklapara and Khanapara-Pilangkata in Ri-Rhoi district.
In a notification issued by Meghalaya Chief Secretary MS Rao, it was stated that the committee that will coordinate for the Ri-Bhoi district will be headed by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
Also, the committee for the West Khasi Hills district will be headed by Public Health Engineering Minister R Tongkhar and the State Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar will head the committee for East Jaintia Hills.
The order also instructed the deputy commissioners of the West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts to provide secretarial and logistic support to the committees.
Further, the committees will engage in a discussion with the locals, elected members of the Autonomous District Council and learn about their perceptions to establish the geographical location of the villages.
