SHILLONG : Senior professors in Meghalaya universities, has requested the Assam students to stay home. Considering the safety of students of non-tribal community, they have been asked not to move out of their own places. This is the consequence of the violent incident that took place in Mukroh Village on 22nd of November 2022.
The incident occurred in West Jaintia Hills, when Assam forest guards killed five local Khasi tribals in the Assam-Meghalaya border. Ever since the episode occurred, the locals of Meghalaya are completely agitated and staging protests all over the state. A series of sporadic incidents has taken place bringing about instability across the place. Vehicles with Assam registered numbers are burnt by miscreants, protesters burning down traffic booths and petrol bombs at police officers.
In order protect the Assam students, the professors has urged them to not move outside as the locals of the state are deeply angry. A student stated on this regard, it's not any kind of threat against us, but a sane decision by the professors to provide safety to us. Another student stated that, as the semester exams are approaching, it is difficult to stay home without having internet services for online class.
The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma assured justice to everyone with that fact that, Union home minister Amit Shah has approved a probe into the matter through CBI or NIA. Justice will be served to the victims and action will be taken against the guilty. During a candlelight protest on Thursday in Shillong, miscreants torched a traffic booth, hurled petrol bombs at officials assigned in the spot. The police had to use tear gas in order to obstruct the violence.
The police has reported several damages caused to Assam registered vehicles in different part of the state. CM Conrad has supported the victims family with Rs 5 lakhs each. He is of the view that Assam police has used excessive power upon innocent people without any provocation and killed them mercilessly. According to the Assam police, they initiated the firing in order to protect themselves from the unknown miscreants.
It is getting extremely difficult for the people of Barak Valley as they are completely dependent on the Shillong Road for travelling.
