SHILLONG: Border Security Force (BSF) successfully foiled a major smuggling attempt near the Indo-Bangladesh border in East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, arresting four Indian nationals.
BSF personnel of 193 Battalion, acting on specific intelligence, intercepted two heavy vehicles carrying sugar worth over Rs. 10 lakh.
The vehicles bearing registration number ML 12 3843 and ML 05 AD 3614 were halted near the international border. On inspection, the security forces found that the goods were intended for illegal export to Bangladesh.
The four accused who were involved in this smuggling were arrested and sent over to the Customs Office in Dangar for further investigation and to complete the legal process.
BSF Meghalaya took to microblogging platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to confirm the operation, stating, "In an ongoing effort to combat smuggling along the Indo-Bangladesh border, BSF troops apprehended four Indian nationals and seized two trucks loaded with sugar worth Rs. 10 lakh."
This operation has been conducted after the successful busting of the smuggling shipment near the international border in the same region on November 20, 2024, which has thwarted another attempt of smuggling. BSF is still on the lookout for ways to combat cross-border smuggling and secure the border.
In another massive operation, BSF Meghalaya troops intercepted four trucks at the tri-junction near Shnongpedding in East Khasi Hills district. The vehicles contained a considerable amount of sugar to the tune of 15,000 kg, valued above Rs. 6 lakh, meant to be smuggled into Bangladesh. The operation was led by BSF's 4th Battalion.
The seized sugar and the vehicles were handed over to the Customs Office in Dawki for further investigation and legal actions.
