SHILLONG: A cattle smuggling attempt near the international border has been successfully foiled by the 4th Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya in the state's West Jaintia Hills District.

Based on reliable intelligence, an operation was swiftly launched by the BSF personnel after getting a tip-off about the illegal stocking of cattle in a betel nut garden intended to be smuggled into neighbouring Bangladesh.

The prompt action by the security forces led to the confiscation of 22 buffaloes and the arrest of five Indian nationals over their involvement in this illicit trade.

The apprehended suspects were unable to provide any valid justification for the possession and stocking of the cattle upon their interception by the BSF.

The standard legal procedures were carried out, following which, the seized cattle and the detainees were handed over to the Police Patrol Post (PPP) in Muktapur. Further probe will be carried out and necessary legal action will be taken.

This successful operation underscores the unwavering commitment of the BSF to protect the international border and deter cross-border crimes.

Meanwhile, earlier last month, a team from the West Guwahati Police District (WGPD) stopped a vehicle bearing registration number AS 01NC 5043 in Jalukbari for trying to smuggle seven cattle. Two men, Saminur Islam and Hashmat Ali, were arrested on the spot for their involvement in the crime.
