SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday engaged with a large gathering of residents at the CM Connect programme held in Ranikor, South West Khasi Hills. Villagers raised pressing issues, including road connectivity, water scarcity, the rising man-elephant conflict, and challenges in agriculture.
The CM Connect initiative aims to directly engage with communities and resolve issues on the spot while ensuring unresolved matters are given priority. Speaking on the man-elephant conflict raised by villagers of Mawpylun, the Chief Minister assured prompt action from the Forest Department. Responding to allegations of intoxicated forest officials attending emergency situations, he stated, “It is a matter of life and death for the people, and we will not tolerate negligence. Stringent action will be taken against anyone found in dereliction of duties.”
Villagers from Nongnah highlighted the tourism potential of their area, to which the Chief Minister announced that Rs 30 lakh had already been earmarked for building a resort and improving road connectivity. He emphasized, “Tourism is not just about buildings; it is about how you make visitors feel and how you involve your community. Let us ensure that our youth and women are included in this growth.”
Residents of Keniang expressed concerns over poor road connectivity, which hampers the transportation of agricultural produce, particularly bay leaves. Assuring intervention, the Chief Minister said their issues would be addressed.
