SHILLONG: The Medical and Sales Representatives Union, under the banner of CRU Shillong, actively participated in the nationwide general strike held on Wednesday, raising a series of urgent demands to protect workers’ rights and revive the struggling pharmaceutical sector.

Led by president Partha Deb, the union strongly opposed the controversial four labour codes and called for their immediate repeal. They also urged the government to establish clear statutory working rules that uphold the dignity and security of all field staff in the pharmaceutical industry.

Key demands included reducing the prices of essential commodities and life-saving medicines, taking strict action against the sale of fake and spurious drugs, and fully reviving public sector pharmaceutical companies that have long suffered from neglect.

The union also pressed for the declaration of Rs 26,910 as the statutory minimum wage, along with the implementation of an eight-hour work schedule. They demanded a minimum pension of Rs 9,000 for all eligible workers. Expressing concern over unethical workplace surveillance, the union condemned sales-related harassment and criticized the growing trend of “call-to-call reporting,” describing it as an unacceptable violation of employee privacy.

The protest, held in solidarity with workers across the country, marked a significant step in the ongoing struggle for fair labour practices and greater accountability in the pharmaceutical sector.
