SHILLONG: In a major development in the high-profile Sohra murder case, Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang announced on Monday that the crime scene recreation is likely to take place on June 17.
Addressing the media, DGP Nongrang emphasized the complexity of the investigation but assured that the police are making substantial progress. “The investigation is going on. A lot of the loose ends are being tied up, and we are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the investigation is foolproof. We have a very solid case and enough evidence. We are hoping to complete the investigation and file the chargesheet within the mandated time,” she said.
When questioned about the specific timing of the crime scene recreation, Nongrang stated, “That I cannot say with certainty, but most probably it will be done tomorrow.”
On the subject of conducting a narco-analysis test, the DGP maintained a cautious approach, saying, “Narco testing is not legally binding. While it has been done in a number of cases, it does not serve as conclusive evidence at this stage.” Regarding the suspects’ police remand, Nongrang informed that the next court production is scheduled for Wednesday. She added, “After Wednesday, we will be seeking additional police custody. It depends on the court, but I am quite confident that when the investigating officer presents the grounds, we have a strong case. However, I would not like to speculate further.”
Clarifying jurisdictional matters, Nongrang confirmed that the investigation remains entirely under the control of the Meghalaya Police. “There is no team from Indore Police at the moment. Only Meghalaya Police is here,” she asserted. Speaking about the status of the interrogation process, the DGP clarified that it had not yet reached its final stage. “We are still working on establishing a clear timeline and determining the roles of each accused. There have been contradictory statements, and we are confronting the accused based on these inconsistencies. So, no, the interrogation is not yet at the final stage,” she explained.
Commending the effort of the police team involved in the investigation, Nongrang highlighted the collective professionalism demonstrated by the force. “It was certainly not just the East Khasi Hills police. While the bulk of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) came from East Khasi Hills, other units within the Meghalaya Police also played a crucial role. Meghalaya Police has always stood out for its professionalism, and I’m proud that we’ve shown the state and the nation that we carry out our duties with integrity and competence,” she concluded.
