SHILLONG: In a significant operation against drug trafficking, Meghalaya police apprehended a suspected trafficker on State Highway 12 near the Kiln Factory at Ambari in Meghalaya's South West Garo Hills on Saturday. The individual Md Aktar Hussain, 32 years old, and is from Fekamari in Assam's South Salmara Mankachar District.
At the time of the interception, authorities recovered a large quantity of suspected illegal drugs, which consisted of 992 yaba tablets, a form of methamphetamine, and two soap boxes containing heroin weighing a total of 19.21 grams. Also confiscated during the operation was a motorcycle used by the suspect.
The arrest is in line with the continuous efforts of South West Garo Hills Police to curb the menace of drug trafficking and improve community safety. Since his detention, Hussain has been kept in police custody for three days to investigate the probability of having links with some big drug trafficking operations.
Since the start of 2024, the South West Garo Hills Police have filed 12 cases of drug trafficking and arrested 17 people. The police are determined to curb the drug menace in the region and break the operations of traffickers, thereby saving the community from the ill effects of substance abuse. More updates on the investigation are likely to come as police try to gather more information about the accomplices and larger trafficking operations.
