SHILLONG: In a tragic incident, a 93-year-old milkman lost his life after being run over by a vehicle in an Assam Rifles convoy in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district on Monday morning.
The incident happened at about 10:30 AM when an elderly man named Jonga Bahadur was riding his bicycle across the road with a container of milk. At that moment, an Assam Rifles convoy heading towards Guwahati was passing through the area. Bahadur was hit by the third vehicle in the convoy.
Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police, Vivekanand Singh, confirmed that the impact left Bahadur with severe injuries. He was immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital in Nongpoh for emergency treatment. Given the seriousness of his condition, he was later referred to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).
Despite medical intervention, Bahadur succumbed to his injuries. As of now, Assam Rifles authorities could not be reached for comments on the incident.
Meanwhile, earlier last month, a poacher had been fatally shot during an encounter with forest guards in the dense forests of Assam's Nameri National Park. The incident had happened about 50 kilometres away from the regional office of the park near the Dikarai area close to Jamugurihat.
According to reports, the poacher had gone to the national park with the intention of hunting a Sambar deer. In the course of a routine operation, the forest guards had detected the poacher and had tried to apprehend him. The suspect had opened fire on the guards, and the latter had retaliated in self-defence.
Gunfire had ensued, which had eventually killed the poacher. The forest guard team had conducted a search at the site and had found a handmade gun and a carcass of a Sambar deer, meaning that the poacher had been conducting some illegal activities in the protected area.
