SHILLONG: Four citizens of Bangladesh were detained by Shillong, Meghalaya police for infiltrating into Indian territory. After receiving a tip regarding suspicious people in a tourist taxi, the arrests were made at the old Anjalee Petrol Pump.
A tourist cab (ML05X6502) driven by TN Sohshang was discovered to be carrying the four Bangladeshis, who were identified as Taijul Islam (27), Raju Ali (60), Rupa Begum, and Akhtar Sheikh.
The group entered India through Nongjri village in East Khasi Hills, according to police, intending to travel to Jammu and Kashmir.
The detainees have been brought into custody by the police, who are looking into what led to their unauthorised entry.
Earlier in December 2024, five Bangladeshi nationals were arrested and deported across the international border by Assam Police in a coordinated attempt to stop illegal infiltration. The names of those deported are Nila Akhtar, Hansi Akhtar, Sraboni, Shohagi Khan, and Sumi Khan.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, commended the police for taking a firm stance against illegal immigration. He praised the troops for their dedication and unwavering efforts to preserve Assam's territorial integrity in a post on X.
The Chief Minister posted on X, "Assam Police has once again shown exemplary dedication by apprehending and deporting five Bangladeshi nationals involved in illegal infiltration. Great work, team!"
This action is part of a broader ongoing initiative by Assam Police to identify and tackle infiltration issues that threaten the state's demographic and security stability.
