SHILLONG: Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Tuesday announced that the state government has begun taking steps to identify and secure vulnerable tourist areas, with Sohra (Cherrapunji) being the starting point. The initiative aims to enhance safety for visitors in regions with high tourist footfall.

Speaking to the media, Lyngdoh stated, “The government has already asked the Sohra Tourism Association to submit a list of areas which they consider vulnerable. Once the list is furnished to us, we will immediately start acting.”

He clarified that the entire process is being guided by requests from local tourism bodies. “Based on the request the Sohra Tourism Association will make to us, we will act accordingly. The exact locations will be identified once the formal requirements are submitted,” he added.

When asked if this initiative is exclusive to Sohra, the minister emphasized that it will be implemented in phases. “We will go phase-wise, but everything will be demand-driven. Areas with the highest tourist footfall will be prioritized for the installation of security cameras,” Lyngdoh said.
