SHILLONG: Marking a new chapter in the administration of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), the institution has officially welcomed two distinguished academicians to key leadership positions.
Vice Chancellor Prof. PS Shukla announced the appointment of Prof. Fameline K. Marak as Pro VC of NEHU's Tura Campus and Prof. Sherwin May Sungoh as the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Pro VC) of NEHU's Shillong Campus, effective from 21 March 2025.
Prof. Marak assumed charge on 26 March 2025. The resolution adopted during NEHU's 85th Emergent Executive Council (EC) meeting on November 14, 2024, led to Prof. Sungoh's appointment.
Despite past opposition from the North Eastern Hill University Teachers' Association (NEHUTA) and the North Eastern Hill University Students' Union (NEHUSU), their elevation to the role of Pro VC took place.
Notably, both Prof. Sungh and Prof. Marak had previously declined their appointments. Despite the earlier reservations, Prof. Sungoh and Prof. Marak have now officially taken charge.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Shukla, in a statement, urged all stakeholders, including faculty, students and non-teaching staff, to collaborate peacefully for NEHU's progress. Prof. Sungoh has contributed to the university's academic development for several decades as a professor in the Department of Education at NEHU, Shillong.
In accordance with NEHU's policies, UGC and Ministry of Education guidelines will govern their pay and allowances during their tenure as Pro VCs. Her service terms will be regulated under Statute 3(2) and Ordinance OE-1 of the university.
