SHILLONG: The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) jointly appealed to the university's teaching staff, urging them to disregard any directives issued by Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla and Registrar Col.

Omkar Singh on Friday. The student bodies expressed their concerns in a letter addressed to NEHUTA president Lakhon Kma, citing violations of the NEHU Act, 1973.

The unions allege that both officials have attempted to resume their duties while being absent from the university, issuing orders from locations outside the university's jurisdiction. They specifically pointed out that Vice Chancellor Shukla has been on leave for 127 days and has not fulfilled his responsibilities since November 15, 2024. The unions criticized his claim to conduct university business remotely from Delhi as arbitrary and unsupported by university regulations.

The letter emphasized that there is no provision in the university's rules allowing for remote resumption of duties. The student unions condemned the actions of both Shukla and Singh, who has also failed to return to the university since his leave began. They warned that any faculty member who chooses to act against the unions' request would be seen as opposing the interests of the student body.

In response to these incidents, NEHUSU and KSU re-emphasized their call to faculty members to cease complying with the instructions of the Vice Chancellor's and Registrar's office, bringing into question strict adherence to prevailing university procedures.
