WILLIAMNAGAR: Meghalaya police apprehended a former militant during an operation at Baringgre Chambildam village in Dambo Rongjeng in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district on Sunday.
Acting on credible intelligence regarding the possession of illegal arms and ammunition, the Special Operation Team of East Garo Hills District Police launched an operation at Baringgre Chambildam under Rongjeng Police Station.
During the operation, Mexbal K. Marak, alias Menil (44), a resident of Silchanggittim village under Rongjeng Police Station, was apprehended. Police seized 7.65mm pistol (Chinese-made) that was recovered from his possession.
During preliminary interrogation, Marak revealed that he was a member of the ANVC-B militant group. He joined the militant organization in 2008 but surrendered during the peace agreement in 2015. Further investigation into the case is underway.
Meanwhile, acting on specific intelligence, troops of the 4th Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Meghalaya successfully thwarted a smuggling attempt by transborder criminals earlier in January.
The operation carried out in challenging terrain near the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IB) in the East Khasi Hills district led to the seizure of contraband items valued at approximately Rs 51.5 lakh.
Another significant drug disposal operation took place in Baghora, where a large quantity of seized drugs was destroyed in the presence of the Drugs Disposal Committee.
