Shillong: Thousands of bighas of farmland in West Garo Hills narrowly escaped devastation after a sudden drop in water levels threatened the crucial Gomaijhora Irrigation Project—until a swift government intervention turned the tide. Rajabala MLA Dr. Mizanur Rahman Kazi, who led the charge for urgent support, has publicly thanked the Water Resources Department for their rapid response in averting an agricultural disaster. “In the Gomaijhora Irrigation Project, water is supplied to thousands and thousands of bighas of land, especially for paddy cultivation,” Dr. Kazi told reporters. “What usually happens during the non-rainy season is that the water level in the reservoir drops, resulting in huge damage to the paddy crop and affecting the livelihoods of the farmers.”
Just a week ago, the situation took a critical turn. “Immediately, I called the Honourable Minister of Water Resources and the Chief Engineer of Water Resources. With their kind help, I could arrange four 20 HP diesel pumps through the Government. Due to electricity issues, diesel pumps were the only quick solution. Now we are pulling water from downstream to the canal, and the paddy fields have been saved,” he said.
Declaring that “the issue is now resolved, and things are going pretty well,” the MLA extended special thanks to Water Resources Minister Comingone Ymbon and departmental officials for their lightning-fast response.
