SHILLONG: The initiative to address water scarcity in Meghalaya’s Tura town receives a significant boost as the central government sanctions Rs 100 crore for the Tura bulk water supply scheme. Minister Marcuise N Marak highlighted this development, citing the scheme's inclusion under the Northeast Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS).
The primary objective is to combat the prevalent water shortage in Tura. Marak emphasized the imminent implementation of the scheme to alleviate the challenges faced by the town’s residents. He stated that upon completing the requisite procedures, a tender would be floated promptly to initiate the project.
The minister outlined the multifaceted benefits of the scheme, underscoring the proposal to establish a versatile reservoir. This reservoir, aside from augmenting the water supply, is intended for various uses such as irrigation and potential eco-tourism ventures. Additionally, Marak emphasized the crucial role these reservoirs would play in emergencies, aiding fire tenders in critical situations.
Expanding beyond Tura, the state government is actively seeking support from the central government for another crucial water supply project—this time directed towards the New Shillong township. This ambitious endeavor aims to cater to the burgeoning needs of the township, ensuring a sustainable and ample water supply for its residents.
The proposed water reservoirs are not only a solution for immediate water shortages but also a forward-looking initiative to address future demands. By integrating multipurpose reservoirs, the scheme not only resolves the present water scarcity but also lays the groundwork for potential ancillary benefits like eco-friendly tourism and emergency preparedness.
In essence, the Tura bulk water supply scheme signifies a substantial step towards mitigating the water crisis in Meghalaya. Its implementation and the planned reservoir creation reflect a comprehensive approach to tackle immediate needs while strategically planning for future requirements. The government’s proactive stance in seeking support for New Shillong township’s water supply indicates a broader commitment to ensuring sustainable and ample water resources across the state.
