SHILLONG: With random roadside parking in Shillong worsening traffic congestion, Shillong Cantonment Board CEO Ayush Maurya has assured strict action against unauthorized parking in the Cantonment area and parking zones. He warned that penalties would be imposed on violators, particularly those charging more than the prescribed amount or parking in unauthorized locations. "If any such case comes to my notice or our office's notice, we will definitely take action. This will be dealt with very, very seriously," he stated.

"So, the contract rules are definitely there when granting land for parking tenders. There are specific guidelines on whether both-side parking is permitted. In certain areas, it is allowed where space is adequate. If contractors charge more than the prescribed amount in the contract or operate in unauthorized locations, we will impose penalties against them," Maurya reiterated.

Regarding the possibility of new parking spaces in the Cantonment area, he clarified, "As of now, there is no such proposal. Traffic congestion in Shillong is a major issue, and the state government is working to create proper parking spaces. If a request comes from the state government, we will consider it, but multiple stakeholders must be consulted before granting land for parking."

He also highlighted past enforcement measures, saying, "Last time, we issued fines-not to the current contractor, but to previous contractors who violated parking terms and conditions. The new contractors have been strictly warned that any violation of the law or contract terms will result in fines."

On illegal parking along both sides of the road, he stated, "We have already issued warnings to all parking contractors. If any violations come to our notice through complaints or routine checks, we will take action as per the contract terms and agreements."
