SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday announced that Meghalaya will soon implement a blockchain-based employee data and promotion tracking system, starting with the police department, to streamline recruitment and career progression processes across government sectors. “This would reduce delays and enhance transparency in recruitment and career progression across government departments,” he said.

The announcement came during the Chief Minister’s virtual address at the inauguration of the two-day workshop on emerging technologies at the State Convention Centre, Shillong, organized by the Department of Information Technology & Communications (IT&C) in collaboration with the National e-Governance Division (NeGD).

Highlighting the transformative role of technology in governance, Sangma cited the success of initiatives under the Meghalaya Enterprise Architecture, including e-Proposal and digital file movement systems. “Even while away from Shillong, I am able to seamlessly clear government files on my mobile device,” he stated, demonstrating real-time digital governance in action.

The Chief Minister also shared how technology has helped Meghalaya achieve a nearly 50% reduction in maternal mortality by tracking high-risk pregnancies and outlined plans to install IoT sensors in 70,000 water springs to improve resource management. Drawing from his recent visit to Japan, Sangma discussed plans to introduce robotics and AI-driven greenhouse farming models in Meghalaya, focusing on crops like strawberries and lettuce. He further emphasized the use of augmented and virtual reality in the tourism sector to create immersive experiences and global exposure for Meghalaya’s cultural and natural heritage.

Reaffirming his vision, Sangma said Meghalaya is committed to becoming the IT and digital services hub of the Northeast. He highlighted upcoming developments such as the expansion of Shillong Tech Parks, new five-star hotels, enhanced airport connectivity with larger aircraft by early 2026, and improved fibre-optic infrastructure to support a digital ecosystem. He urged deeper collaboration with NeGD, IndiaAI, and other partners to ensure that technological progress reaches even the remotest corners of the state.

Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang emphasized infrastructure building and local language accessibility, noting the planned integration of Khasi and Garo languages into the AI-powered Bhashini app.

Joining virtually, Nand Kumaram, President and CEO of NeGD, called for a shift from pilot projects to scalable, product-driven technology solutions and stressed collaboration with startups and educational institutions to build sustainable digital governance models.

The workshop will feature sessions on artificial intelligence, blockchain, cybersecurity, user experience in governance, and public digital infrastructure, aligned with Meghalaya’s Digital Meghalaya vision and national initiatives such as Digital India and IndiaAI.
