SHILLONG: The official mascot and theme song for the 6th Meghalaya Games were unveiled at a curtain-raiser event held at the District Library Auditorium in Mynthong, Jowai, Meghalaya.
Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri introduced the mascot, “U Kiang,” and the theme song, “Niom Beit Naphang,” both of which celebrate unity, sportsmanship, and the state’s rich cultural heritage.
The theme song, “Niom Beit Naphang,” captures the spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship, while the mascot, “U Kiang,” symbolizes the courage and resilience of a freedom fighter, reflecting the determination and strength of Meghalaya’s people.
The event saw the presence of notable personalities, including Wailadmiki Shylla, local MLA and chairman of the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA), and John Kharshiing, working president of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA).
State officials, local leaders, and community representatives also emphasized Meghalaya's dedication to sports development.
In his speech, Sports Minister Warjri emphasized the need for investment in sports infrastructure and youth development. He highlighted that sports not only foster discipline but also strengthen unity among the youth. Warjri outlined the government’s initiatives to improve sports facilities in schools and colleges, ensuring these venues continue to serve educational institutions and local communities well beyond the games.
The minister also shared the government’s vision of empowering athletes to excel at state and national levels. Warjri reassured the audience of the state's steadfast commitment to fostering sporting talent. He also thanked government officials, local leaders, and community organizations for their combined efforts in making the 6th Meghalaya Games a reality and wished the athletes the best of luck in their preparations.
Right after the ceremony, Warjri, MLA Shylla, and other organizers visited several sports venues to assess the preparations for the upcoming National Games. The event ended with a performance by the Elev8 Tribes Choir, whose beautiful renditions of two songs enchanted the audience.
