SHILLONG: Three major associations of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU)—the Teachers’ Association,Students’ Union, and Non-teaching Staff Association—have raised concerns about the university’s administration. They stated that the Vice Chancellor’s office is not functioning properly after the regular VC, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, went on extended leave.
In a letter to acting VC Prof. Nirmalendu Saha, they emphasized that university rules and government directives ensure the institution remains operational even in the absence of a full-time VC. However, since November 15, 2024, no Executive Council meeting has been held, despite the acting VC successfully conducting an Academic Council meeting on December 4, 2024.
The associations also referred to government guidelines that authorize the acting VC to exercise administrative and financial powers like a full-time VC. Despite these provisions, Prof. Saha has not convened the Executive Council meeting, which they believe has severely impacted NEHU’s functioning. They warned that continued inaction could lead to serious consequences, including non-compliance with important university matters.
They questioned why the acting VC has not called the meeting, as it is essential for decision-making in the university’s interest. They clarified that the VC does not make unilateral decisions but facilitates discussions among council members.
Given the urgency of the situation, they urged the acting VC to convene the Executive Council meeting immediately. If their request is ignored, they warned they would take necessary steps to ensure the Vice Chancellor’s office resumes full functionality for the university’s welfare.
