RI BHOI: President Droupadi Murmu’s scheduled visit to Meghalaya has been cancelled due to a forecast of bad weather on Thursday. Murmu was scheduled to inaugurate the golden jubilee celebrations of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) for the Northeastern Hills Region at Umiam in the Ri Bhoi district.

Ri Bhoi SP Vivekanand Singh confirmed the cancellation of her visit. “The president has cancelled her visit to the state due to bad weather. The new date for her visit will be announced later,” an ICAR official said. However, the weather condition on Thursday was found to be normal.

The event commemorates 50 years of the institution’s contributions to research and development, particularly in enhancing agricultural practices and rural livelihoods in the northeastern region.

However, the inaugural program will be attended by Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Meghalaya Governor Chandrasekhar H Vijayashankar, and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

Besides inaugurating the jubilee celebrations, President Murmu was scheduled to inaugurate the farmers’ expo, which will be participated in by farmers and self-help groups from all the eight northeastern states. She was also scheduled to interact with the progressive farmers at the expo.

The institute’s primary focus has been on promoting and conducting research, extension activities, and human resource development in agriculture and allied sectors, with a specific emphasis on the hilly and mountainous ecosystems of the North Eastern Hill Region.
