Shillong: Amid mounting regional tensions and cross-border threats, the Border Security Force (BSF) has heightened its operational readiness along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya, reinforcing surveillance and deploying stringent security measures to prevent any breach.
“In light of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the unrest in Bangladesh last year, our forces are fully prepared operationally. Troops remain on high alert and all necessary preventive measures are in place,” said OP Upadhyay, Inspector General of BSF’s Meghalaya Frontier.
The BSF has intensified coordination with its Bangladeshi counterpart, resulting in successful crackdowns on border-related crimes. “The BGB has been proactive and responsive, especially in cracking down on touts and individuals attempting illegal border crossings,” he said.
Joint intelligence-led operations have strengthened security architecture across critical border points, especially in the Garo Hills, where infiltration attempts have sharply dropped. “This collaboration has significantly curbed illegal infiltration, with a 90 percent reduction in cross-border movement of Bangladeshi nationals in the Garo Hills region,” he added.
Twenty-four checkpoints are now jointly manned by BSF personnel and Meghalaya Police, as the two agencies work in tandem to plug security gaps and tighten border controls. Tourist hotspots like Dawki are also under enhanced security cover. “The security of every citizen, including tourists, remains a top priority,” said Upadhyay.
