AIZAWL: In a major crackdown on smuggling activities, Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police joined hands to tackle illegal trade in the northeastern state. On Sunday, based on reliable intelligence, they launched an operation in Champhai district, which led to the seizure of five kilograms of heroin, valued at Rs 39.75 lakh. The operation took place in the General Area of Crossing Point III (Laipian Kai).
During the operation, a 52-year-old woman named Zingengmawii was arrested on Saturday. She is believed to be connected to the heroin consignment. Both the woman and the seized drugs were handed over to the Zokhawthar Police. This has prompted a detailed investigation into the wider drug trafficking network in the region.
Earlier, Assam Rifles had also successfully recovered heroin worth Rs 75.60 lakh from Zokhawthar in Champhai district and arrested one person. In another operation on January 20, Assam Rifles and Mizoram’s Hnahthial Police seized 260 cases of foreign cigarettes worth Rs 3.38 crore from the General Area of Tuichang Bridge in Lawngtlai district. A resident of Champhai was arrested during this operation, and the goods were handed over to the local police for further legal action.
The ongoing smuggling of contraband is a major concern for both Mizoram and India. These successful operations highlight the efforts of Assam Rifles to combat narcotics trafficking and protect the region from the growing threat of drug abuse.
