AIZAWL: The Mizoram government is exploring the development of a ropeway and cable-car system connecting Aizawl to Lengpui, aimed at boosting tourism and improving connectivity, according to an official statement. Recently, a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma reviewed the feasibility of the project, which will also link the Sairang railway station.

The Aizawl-Sairang railway station-Lengpui ropeway project aims to improve transportation between Aizawl, the state capital, and Lengpui, home to Mizoram’s only airport. This initiative is designed to boost tourism and enhance the state's public transport infrastructure.

Agenda items were the question of whether the project should be supervised by the state’s tourism department or by the Aizawl Sustainable Urban Transport Project (ASUTP), a scheme under Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) department with external funding.

Key officials who attended the meeting include Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Minister K. Sapdanga, Tourism Minister Lalrinpuii, Chief Minister's Finance Adviser TBC Lalvenchhunga and representatives of several government departments.

Meanwhile, earlier last month, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma laid the foundation stone for Meghalaya’s first passenger ropeway project at Shillong Peak Viewpoint on 5th December, 2024, marking the official commencement of a Rs 175-crore initiative aimed at providing panoramic views of Shillong city and enhancing the state’s tourism infrastructure.

The foundation stone was originally laid by President Droupadi Murmu in January this year. The project, which connects Shillong Peak and Lawsohtun, is expected to attract both domestic and international tourists. The Chief Minister and Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh handed over the letter of acceptance to the construction consortium KEC International Limited – Tantia Construction Limited JV, officially kick-starting the construction phase. The ropeway will be executed in partnership with the French company POMA, which will supply key equipment.
