AIZAWL: The Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) government in Mizoram has been able to recruit 1,507 teachers in different educational institutions since assuming office in December 2023.
This was announced by Education Minister Vanlalthlana in the assembly session on Thursday, while answering a question from ZPM member V L Zaithanzama.
The ZPM, led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, won the assembly elections held on November 23, 2023, securing 27 out of 40 seats. According to the minister, of the total recruits, 1,188 teachers were appointed to state-run schools, while 319 were hired under the Samagra Shiksha scheme.
The breakdown of the new hires includes 461 for primary schools, 348 for middle schools, 457 for high schools, and 241 for higher secondary schools. However, the minister noted that 526 of the newly appointed teachers have not yet joined their positions.
To meet this deficit, the government is recruiting candidates from the reserved list to fill middle and high school vacancies. Also, 234 new teachers will be recruited for primary schools since there were no reserve panels for those posts.
Vanlalthlana further informed that in 2024, 20 teachers retired when they attained the age of superannuation, and 158 others died in service, again pointing towards the necessity of continuous recruitment in the education sector.
