KOHIMA: On February 22, 2025, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio officially inaugurated Meluri District as the 17th district of Nagaland at a ceremony held at the public ground in Meluri.
This announcement came after Meluri was officially notified as a district on November 2, 2024. During the event, Rio congratulated the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) for their support in the formation of the district, particularly their role in issuing the "No Objection Certificate."
He called for continued unity and brotherhood between the Chakhesang and Pochury tribes, as well as the broader Naga community.
Rio highlighted Meluri's historical significance, pointing out that its administrative center was established 67 years ago, with a Chairman Bench Court set up in 1958.
He referred to Meluri as the "Land of Fortunes", emphasizing its abundant natural resources, cultural heritage, and economic potential. Notable attractions like Shiloi Lake, Tizu River, and the Trade Centre at Avakhung were also mentioned.
The Chief Minister unveiled a monolith to commemorate the inauguration and also opened the Multidiscipline Sports Stadium. Various leaders, including the Chief Secretary, Advisors, and Ministers, delivered short speeches at the event.
Cultural performances by local groups and a special song added to the celebration. The program was chaired by Mhathung Tsanglao, Deputy Commissioner of Meluri.
