Kohima: Nagaland is likely to be represented by a woman member in the Rajya Sabha for the first time, as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader S Phangnon Konyak filed her nomination on Monday.

Konyak is also the president of the party's Mahila Morcha in the state.

It is noteworthy to mention that if Konyak wins, she will become the first woman MP and the first Rajya Sabha MP of BJP from Nagaland.

The election for the lone Nagaland seat will be held on March 31.

The BJP along with partner NDPP has a total of 35 MLAs in the 60-member assembly. At the same time, the Naga People's Front (NPF) has 25 members in the assembly, which met on Saturday to decide whether to support Konyak or field a separate candidate, but the meeting was inconclusive.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio lauded Konyak's selection and asserted that her selection is a big step.

''There had been more than 10 applicants seeking approval for candidature and Konyak's name was shortlisted as we feel she is the right person,'' Rio added.
