GANGTOK: In response to the growing influx of tourists seeking winter experiences in the region, Gangtok police have introduced strict winter safety protocols at the Sherathang Check Post. All vehicles are now required to be equipped with snow removal tools and chains to ensure safe travel through the area.
The new regulations mandate that vehicles carry shovels for emergency snow clearance and install tyre chains for better traction on icy mountain roads. These measures aim to enhance safety as tourists flock to enjoy snow-viewing opportunities in the area.
Additionally, authorities have set rigid entry and exit timings. Vehicles must pass through the 3rd Mile Check Post before 10:30 am and leave by 5:00 pm to avoid tourists being stranded in potentially dangerous conditions after dark.
Another significant change is the requirement for vehicle permits to be obtained in advance, and vehicles must carry waste management tools, such as dustbins or trash bags, to help keep the area clean.
While some tourism operators expressed concerns about the additional costs, the safety protocols have largely been welcomed for their potential to improve visitor safety.
