AGARTALA: Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Customs Department, has seized a large quantity of banned drugs and dismantled a huge cannabis plantation in Tripura in a robust effort to combat the illicit drug trade. These operations have significantly disrupted local smuggling networks, which were conducted over the past 24 hours.
Acting on specific intelligence, security forces seized a large quantity of Eskof Corex syrup, which is often misused as a narcotic, from a forest area of Nagicherra in Agartala in the early hours of February 3. As many as 6,900 bottles were recovered, and the market value was estimated at Rs. 40 lakh. The authorities said that this consignment was meant for illegal distribution and had posed a serious threat of substance abuse in the community.
The seized drugs were then handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation and legal proceedings after the seizure.
In the same afternoon, the Assam Rifles carried out another successful operation targeting illegal drug cultivation. Late at night, security personnel launched a raid in the Bejoynagar area of Sepahijala district and destroyed nearly 75,000 marijuana plants spread over 100 acres. The plantation is estimated to be worth nearly Rs. 2.9 crores and was one of the prime sources of supply for drug peddlers in that area. This operation was carried out in cooperation with officials of the Custom Preventive Force, Sonamura, and at the Sepahijala District Police Headquarters.
These officials said that the steps have served to underscore the intent of law enforcement agencies to root out drug-related activities and check the proliferation of illegal drugs in the region.
