AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced the creation of pink toilets across 19 civic bodies in Tripura to offer hygienic facilities for working women.
“The existing public toilets are often inadequate for women due to hygiene issues. Pink toilets, which are exclusively for women, aim to resolve this problem,” Dr. Saha said. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, symbolized by the distinctive pink color of the toilets.
CM Saha highlighted the government's history of empowering women through various policies. “We have introduced 33 percent reservation for women in governance and raised the quota for women soldiers in the Tripura State Rifles from 15 percent to 33 percent. Furthermore, nine women police stations have been set up across the state to effectively address crimes against women,” he stated.
Dr. Saha emphasized economic empowerment by noting the success of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in creating sustainable livelihoods. “More than 85,000 Lakhpati Didis have earned over Rs. 1 lakh through SHG activities. We are now focused on appointing Drone Didis to further increase women’s participation in emerging sectors,” he said.
The Chief Minister attributed the restoration of women’s dignity, particularly in rural areas, to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking at a winter clothes distribution event organized by Ward 40 of Agartala Municipal Corporation, Dr. Saha also touched on key outcomes from the 72nd NEC plenary session.
“Border security with Bangladesh was a major topic. We were advised to strengthen surveillance along porous areas. I have informed the Union Home Minister about the condition of our borders and emphasized areas that require immediate restoration,” he stated.
