AGARTALA: Two organisations of former extremists who returned to mainstream life at different times—the Joint Action and Rehabilitation Committee (JARC) and the Joint Action Committee (JAC)—have joined hands to launch an agitation on the eve of Independence Day. They also claimed to be receiving support from Gen Z, whose members, they said, would join the protest in large numbers.
Addressing reporters, the organisations said the agitation would begin on August 13 and continue until Independence Day if the government does not respond positively to their demands.
As part of the programme, they announced plans to block National Highway No. 208 at Sadhu Chandra Para and stage a rail blockade at Bhrigudas Para, both in Jirania subdivision, about 30 km from Agartala. They added that the agitation could spread to other places as more Gen Z groups were expected to join.
The returnees, who had surrendered their arms and rejoined mainstream life, said they had been waiting for the government to fulfil promises relating to their rehabilitation. They claimed that despite repeated appeals and earlier protests, the government had not taken any steps to resolve their problems.
They further alleged that the government would be responsible for any disruption during the Independence Day celebrations, as they had already informed the authorities and sought discussions but had not received any response so far.
