Agartala: Amid statewide protests over increased power tariffs, the Tripura Government has decided to absorb the entire tariff hike, sparing consumers from any additional financial burden. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that consumers would not have to pay the increased rates approved by the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC). The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, keeping in mind the challenges faced by ordinary citizens, households, farmers, small traders, businesses, and industries.

Nath stated that the revised tariff has been effective since May 2026, and many consumers have already paid higher electricity bills. He assured that any excess amount paid will be adjusted in the electricity bills for September, October, and November. The tariff hike had sparked widespread protests, with large crowds demonstrating and, in some areas, damaging properties of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited. The government acknowledged the anxiety caused by the sharp increase in fixed charges and listened to the concerns raised by various consumer groups.

"We understand the difficulties faced by the people of Tripura. The government will not let this additional burden fall on the people-we will bear the cost," the minister said.
