SONAMURA: A fatal road accident in the Sonamura sub-division of Tripura claimed the life of Faijal Haque and left another person critically injured on Friday, highlighting growing public anger over the deplorable condition of roads in the area.
According to locals, the incident occurred when an auto-rickshaw veered to avoid a broken patch on an under-construction road, leading to the tragedy. Residents blamed the slow pace of road-widening work and negligence by the construction agency and the central government agency for the hazardous conditions.
The affected stretch, connecting Udaipur in the Gomati district to the Srimantpur land port in Sepahijala district, has been in disrepair for over three years, according to reports. Despite repeated protests by locals demanding immediate repairs and better road safety measures, authorities have only provided verbal assurances without any concrete action.
Dr. Partha Pratim Saha, medical officer at Sonamura Community Health Center, confirmed that road accident cases have been on the rise. He revealed that the facility treated two accident victims today, including the deceased Faijal Haque, who succumbed to severe chest injuries.
The growing frequency of accidents in the area has prompted fresh threats of agitation by locals, who are demanding accountability from the construction agency and government authorities.
