AGARTALA: Three prominent leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from South Tripura district surrendered at the Belonia Court, complying with a directive from the Supreme Court on saturday.

The leaders—district secretary Tapas Datta, Trilokesh Sinha, and Babul Debnath, divisional secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) in Belonia—are implicated in a case concerning the physical assault of Judge Ruhi Das Pal in 2015.

The incident in question took place on September 2, 2015, during a bandh called by the Left Trade Union. It is alleged that the three leaders, along with other individuals, forcibly entered the court premises and assaulted Judge Pal while participating in picketing activities in support of the bandh.

After the attack, Sudip Pal, who was then the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Belonia, took suo motu cognizance of the incident and a case was registered under Belonia Police Station (Case No. 113/15).

Arrested initially, the accused had secured bail after filing a writ petition before the Supreme Court. But in a judgment released on February 18, 2025, the highest court directed Datta, Sinha, and Debnath to surrender before court.

Government advocate Kishore Majumdar confirmed that the surrender is an important milestone of the ongoing judicial process, and the next hearing in the Supreme Court is slated for March 18.
