AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has said that Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh has assured him of installing a cutting-edge weather radar in Tripura within a year. As Tripura witnessed unusually heavy rainfall last year, Saha sought technological support for improved forecasting and disaster preparedness.

Chief Minister Saha met Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh on Sunday to discuss key developmental initiatives, including advanced weather forecasting, strengthening the bamboo industry, and enhancing regional connectivity. “Singh assured me that the Ministry of Earth Sciences will set up a state-of-the-art weather radar in the state within a year,” Saha said.

The radar, in conjunction with an existing space research centre in the region, will enhance real-time weather predictions for rainfall and cyclones, helping mitigate the impact of extreme weather events.

On boosting Tripura’s bamboo industry, Dr. Singh informed the Chief Minister that specialized institutes in Assam’s Jorhat and Manipur, dedicated to biotechnology and bamboo research, will collaborate with the Tripura government to maximize bamboo’s economic potential.

Saha stated, “The meeting underscored the Centre’s commitment to supporting Tripura’s development through technological advancements, administrative coordination, and improved regional connectivity.”

During the meeting, Saha also discussed the recently inaugurated Agartala-Akhaura railway link, strengthening connectivity between the northeast and Bangladesh.
