AGARTALA: Serious concerns have been raised regarding the state's growing number of privately managed addiction treatment facilities, particularly in the hilly regions, since the majority of these facilities are operated by inexperienced individuals who pretend to be professionals in counselling and helping young people overcome their addictions.
This problem has gained attention after the body of a tribal youth was found in the toilet of a privately operated de-addiction facility in the Ampura neighbourhood of the Khowai subdivision in Tripura.
According to sources in Khowai, Ronal Debbarma, a 21-year-old tribal teenager who lived in the subdivision's Ratanpur area, had been admitted to the Yatri Sukang anti-drug clinic in the Ampura area.
Due to his long-term drug addiction, Ronal was eventually admitted to the de-addiction facility after his family and the people of Ratanpur village were concerned about his drug abuse.
It is unknown what kind of counselling or therapy he had at the Yatri Sukang anti-drug clinic. His body was discovered in the de-addiction center's toilet early on February 8.
The officers from Baizolbari police station hurried to the de-addiction centre after receiving the information, and they moved the deceased body to the mortuary at Khowai hospital.
The post-mortem determined that Ronal's death was a suicide, and the body was given to his family. Ronal's mysterious suicide has sparked numerous concerns regarding the quality of care and treatment provided to addicts in the state's de-addiction facilities.
