NEW DELHI: Tensions are reportedly high in the Indian cricket team’s dressing room as they face mounting pressure in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With Australia leading the series 2-1 and one Test remaining in Sydney, India’s chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final is hanging by a thread.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir is now under scrutiny as India risks losing the series in Australia.
Gambhir’s frustration peaked after India’s defeat in the fourth Test in Melbourne. Disappointed with players who deviated from team strategies, he reportedly reprimanded them, emphasizing that he had allowed them six months to play “their way,” but the leniency ends now. Players failing to adhere to the team’s plans moving forward risk being dropped.
Instances of individual lapses during the Melbourne Test, such as Rishabh Pant’s reckless dismissal, Virat Kohli’s edge to slips chasing a wide delivery, and Rohit Sharma’s inability to convert a cautious start, were said to have been particularly frustrating for Gambhir.
These errors were seen as pivotal in India’s loss and have reportedly created conflict between the coach’s strategies and players’ execution on the field.
As tensions escalate, Gambhir is reportedly prepared to take strict action, signaling a no-nonsense approach to ensure accountability and adherence to team plans. With the final Test and the WTC qualification on the line, all eyes are on the Indian team’s next moves.
