MELBOURNE: In recognition of his outstanding 2024 performances, Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been nominated for the coveted ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award. The other nominees are Kamindu Mendis of Sri Lanka and Joe Root and Harry Brook of England.

Bumrah, who had come back to Test cricket in 2023 after regaining fitness from his back injury, turned in his best season in 2024. He played just 13 Tests and, in the process, achieved 71 wickets at an average of 14.92 and a strike rate of 30.16, the best figures for a bowler in the format during the year.

The ICC claims that Bumrah stands out because of his versatility, which includes playing on both the more difficult subcontinental grounds and the pace-friendly tracks in Australia and South Africa. He spearheaded the bowling attack with exceptional efficiency during India's tour of Australia, putting on a spectacular display.

Notably, Bumrah's leadership in the Perth Test had earned India its first win in history when the pacer took eight wickets in the game. Subsequent matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy saw India struggle, but Bumrah was among the players who were quite consistent and produced nine wickets in the fourth Test. He achieved 200 Test wickets in only 44 games.

England’s Joe Root also had an outstanding year, amassing 1,556 runs in 17 Tests at an average of 55.57. Root’s achievements include six centuries and five half-centuries, marking the fifth time he has surpassed 1,000 runs in a calendar year.

The ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award celebrates excellence in Test cricket, and this year’s nominees have demonstrated remarkable skill and resilience.
