GUWAHATI: The Brahmaputra Volleyball League (BVL) will join hands with the Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) and the global volleyball community to celebrate the first-ever World Volleyball Day on July 7 across Assam.

World Volleyball Day commemorates the birth of the sport, first invented by William G. Morgan on July 7, 1895, and publicly demonstrated at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Recognizing its historical significance, the FIVB has declared July 7 as World Volleyball Day, to be observed in over 220 countries worldwide.

BVL, the first grassroots volleyball initiative globally to receive the Silver Certification of Excellence from the FIVB Volleyball Foundation, will mark the occasion with a week-long celebration from July 1 to 7.

The celebration will involve over 12,000 participants—including children, volunteers, officials, parents, and supporters—across 150 BVL centres in 32 districts of Assam. As part of the initiative, BVL coaches and centre in-charges aim to introduce volleyball to more than 3,000 new individuals, including both children and adults who have never played the sport before.
