GUWAHATI: Sports organizer and former first class cricketer Devajit Saikia has been appointed as the acting secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This significant appointment marks a proud moment for Assam as Saikia assumes one of the key roles in Indian cricket administration.
BCCI President Roger Binny exercised his constitutional powers for the appointment. Saikia, who previously served as a joint secretary at BCCI, will replace Jay Shah as acting secretary. Shah recently assumed the role of ICC Chairman.
In his first reaction to The Sentinel on Sunday, Saikia expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Assam and the cricketing community for their unwavering support. “I am deeply grateful to the people of Assam and the players who have stood beside me and supported me throughout this journey,” he said. It may be mentioned here that a couple of days ago, Saikia was also appointed as a Board Director of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
He also extended special thanks to BCCI president Roger Binny and outgoing secretary Jay Shah for entrusting him with this responsibility. “I sincerely thank Jay Shah and Roger Binny for their faith in me. Their trust inspires me to take this role with utmost dedication and commitment,” Saikia added.
Devajit Saikia’s appointment is being celebrated across Assam, with many hailing it as a testament to his contributions to cricket administration and the recognition of Assam’s growing role in Indian cricket. Assam Cricket Association (ACA) extends its warmest congratulations to Saikia on his appointment as the acting secretary of the BCCI.
ACA President Taranga Gogoi, Secretary Tridib Konwar, and all members of the Apex Council expressed their elation at this remarkable milestone. “His elevation to this prestigious position is a proud moment not only for Assam but also for the cricketing fraternity of the Northeast,” they stated.
The Gauhati Sports Association (GSA) also hailed Saikia’s elevation in cricket administration. A special felicitation ceremony was organized at the GSA office, where President Paresh Chandra Das and other office bearers gathered to honor Saikia. Notably, Saikia also holds the position of secretary of the GSA, further underscoring his pivotal role in regional cricket development.
