Mayank Clinches India Open International Chess Title

International Master Mayank Chakraborty wins the 8th South Point School Guwahati India Open International Chess tournament title.

GUWAHATI: International Master Mayank Chakraborty, a student of South Point School, clinched the title in the 8th edition of South Point School Guwahati India Open International Rating Chess tournament that concluded at South Point School on Monday evening. Mayank, the top seed of the tournament, remained undefeated in all the ten rounds of this swiss league classical event. In the final round he defeated Parambata Sarkar of west Bengal in just 35 moves to emerge champion.

Samyak Dharewe of West Bengal finished on second position while Vikramaditya Kulkarni of Maharastra was placed third.

The champion of the tournament was awarded Rs one lakh as prize money while the runners up and second runners up went home with Rs 80 thousand and Rs 70 thousand respectively. A total of Rs 10 ten lakh was distributed as prize money in this six days mega chess event which saw the participation of 396 players from across the country.

The Prize distribution ceremony was attended by renowned Chess coach, Motivational speaker and former commonwealth chess champion Atanu Lahiri, senior literary scholar and social worker Mrinalini Devi, Principal South Point School Krishnanjan Chanda, Deputy Commisioner of Police Amitabh Basumatary, Project Head Snehabandhan Vijaya Sarma and Dr Siben Dutta.
