Guwahati: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) hosted the “Grassroots to Gold” conference at the NEDFI Convention Centre in Guwahati on Friday. Minister of Sports & Youth Welfare, Nandita Gorlosa, addressed several critical issues and proposed solutions for the development of sports in the State and region.
She emphasized the need for high-quality coaching, increased investment in sports infrastructure, and hosting international events in the Northeast to unlock the region’s sporting potential. The Minister highlighted the historical challenges posed by militancy and extremism over the past two to three decades, which have hindered sports growth in certain areas.
Minister Gorlosa discussed the disproportionate focus on cricket, which has left many other sports underdeveloped. She emphasized the Northeast’s potential in disciplines like boxing and weightlifting and advocated for bringing in foreign coaches to raise coaching standards.
The conference brought together policymakers, industry leaders, sportspersons, and advocates of sports development.
