GUWAHATI: A responsible and unbeaten knock by Upendra Yadav, supported by two crucial partnerships, rescued Railways on Day 2 of their Ranji Trophy match against Assam at the ACA Stadium here today. Railways finished the day at 198-5, with Upendra remaining not out on 82.
The match started on Day II after the opening day’s play was abandoned due to poor light caused by thick layer of fog. However, visibility issues continued to disrupt play, allowing only 67 overs to be bowled throughout the day. Invited to bat first, Railways had a dismal start, collapsing to 18-3 in the morning session.
Mukhtar Hussain gave Assam the initial breakthrough by dismissing opener Anchit Yadav for a duck. He followed it up by removing A Ahuja (7). Meanwhile, Akash Sengupta sent back captain Pratham Singh (2), putting Railways under significant pressure.
From this precarious position, Upendra Yadav began the recovery process, first with opener Vivek Singh and later with B Merai. The fourth-wicket partnership between Upendra and Vivek added 66 valuable runs. Upendra then forged an unbeaten 80-run stand for the sixth wicket with Vivek, steadying the innings further.
At stumps, Upendra remained unbeaten on 82 off 165 balls, hitting eight boundaries and one six. Vivek Singh contributed a steady 37, which included four boundaries and two sixes, while B Merai was also unbeaten on 37, striking four boundaries.
All five of Railways’ wickets fell to Assam’s pace attack, with Mukhtar Hussain and Akash Sengupta claiming two wickets each, while Mrinmoy Dutta chipped in with one.
Brief scores: Railways 1st innings 198-5, Upendra Yadav 82 no, Vivek Singh 37, B Merai 37 no, Mukhtar Hussain 2-18, Akash Sengupta 2-53, Mrinmoy Dutta 1-33.
