Wimbledon: Defending champion Alcaraz survives scare, Fonseca flies past Fearnley

Carlos Alcaraz battles past Fabio Fognini in five sets to begin his Wimbledon title defence with a 7-5, 6-7, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 win on Centre Court.

LONDON: Carlos Alcaraz began his bid for a third straight Wimbledon title with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 win over Italian veteran Fabio Fognini on Centre Court at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, on Monday. World No. 2 Alcaraz, who is looking to clinch the sixth Major of his career, will take on British qualifier Oliver Tarvet in the second round.

Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca made an immediate impact at the majors with a classy debut at Wimbledon, racing past home favourite Jacob Fearnley in straight sets. The Brazilian NextGenATP star defeated Fearnley 6-4, 6-1, 7-6(5) to become the first 18-year-old to reach the second round at the grass major since Carlos Alcaraz in 2021. Agencies
