5.7 Temblor Jolts Assam; Four Earthquakes Hit Northeast and Neighbourhood

Four earthquakes were recorded in Assam, the Northeast region, and the neighbourhood today.

Guwahati: Four earthquakes were recorded in Assam, the Northeast region, and the neighbourhood today. The earthquake with the highest magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale occurred at 11.06 AM with the epicentre in Manipur. The jolt from the quake was felt in Assam also.

The quake’s effect was also felt in the Assam Assembly on Wednesday, as everything was paused for a few seconds. The budget session of the Assembly is in progress, and the proceedings for the day have started. Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass was delivering a speech when the jolt was felt and a brief pause ensued.

The first of the four quakes, with a 4.7 magnitude, occurred at 3.36 AM today. The quake had its epicentre at Latitude 16.98 N and Longitude 95.48 E in Myanmar, at a depth of 32 km.

The second earthquake, recorded with a magnitude of 4.5, struck at 3.54 AM. The epicentre of the quake was located at Latitude 17.13 N and Longitude 95.44 E, again in Myanmar, at a depth of 10 km.

The third and biggest of the quakes, with a 5.7 magnitude, today jolted Assam and the NE at 11:06 AM. The quake’s epicentre was located at Latitude 24.75 N and Longitude 94.35 E, in the region of Kamjong in Manipur, with its depth recorded at 110 km.

The fourth temblor of the day, which registered a magnitude of 4.1 (Richter), occurred at 12:20 PM. The epicentre was recorded at Latitude 24.70 N and Longitude 94.34 E, again in the region of Kamjong in Manipur, at a depth of 66 km.

Earlier, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 hit Assam at 2.25 AM on February 27. The epicentre of the quake was located at Morigaon, at a depth of 16 km.

Frequent quakes have been hitting Assam and the NE region of late. The people in the region are feeling apprehensive following the frequent earthquakes, with a few of them registering around 5.0 on the Richter scale.
