Bids invited for preparation of DPR for 303-km Phulbari-Shillong stretch

Guwahati: The Government of India has taken up an ambitious plan to connect Shillong with the rest of India by constructing a new four-lane highway through Dhubri in Assam. National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) is already constructing a bridge over the River Brahmaputra between Assam’s Dhubri and Phulbari in Meghalaya. The new road is proposed to be constructed from the Phulbari point to Meghalaya’s capital, Shillong.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has now entrusted NHIDCL with preparing the feasibility study and detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Phulbari-Shillong stretch of NH 127B/NH 106. NHIDCL, in turn, has invited tenders for the appointment of consultants to provide consultancy services to prepare the feasibility study and DPR for the construction of a 4-lane highway with a paved shoulder from Phulbari to Shillong.
The tentative length of the proposed stretch of highway is 303 km, and NHIDCL has set a completion target of 6 months to carry out the feasibility study and preparation of DPR from the date of appointment of the consultant for the same.
The proposed road from Phulbari to Shillong will considerably reduce the distance from Shillong to the Indian mainland, eliminating the need to travel through Guwahati. Travellers from outside the NE region headed to Shillong will be able to divert from the existing NH at Dhubri and traverse the upcoming bridge between Dhubri and Phulbari to take the highway NH 127B/NH 106 directly to Shillong. The under-construction Dhubri-Phulbari bridge is a four-lane one, and the entire project comprises a length of 19.28 km, including road approaches to the bridge.
