Guwahati: In the past four years, from 2021 to 2024, as many as 156 illegal Bangladeshis were apprehended in the state. So far, two persons have been granted citizenship under CAA in Assam. The facts were revealed by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in response to a question by Kamalakhya Dey Purkayashta in the Assembly on Monday. According to the information from the CM, 51 illegal Bangladeshis were apprehended in 2021, 57 in 2022, 22 in 2023, and 26 in 2024.
He further stated that issues related to citizenship came under the purview of the Government of India. Citing data from the Directorate of Census Operations, the CM said that a total of 39 people have applied in Assam for citizenship under CAA. Out of these, two persons have been granted citizenship, and another 18 are under consideration. Also, 19 applications were closed, but there is scope for re-application, he said. Regarding enrolment in Aadhaar, the CM stated that the Aadhaar Enrolment Saturation Status in Assam is 96.97% till January 2025.
