Assam: 16 Wetlands Identified in State for Enhancement of Floodwater Retention

The Assam Government has identified 16 wetlands so far in the flood-prone districts in the state so as to ‘enhance water retention capacity and mitigate risk of flooding and erosion’.

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has identified 16 wetlands so far in the flood-prone districts in the state so as to ‘enhance water retention capacity and mitigate risk of flooding and erosion’.

The state government will approach the Centre for the funding for the ‘restoration and rejuvenation of wetlands of Assam to enhance water retention capacity and mitigate risk of flooding and erosion’ under the National Mitigation Fund.

The recent state executive committee (SEC) meeting of the ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) held under the chairmanship of the Assam Chief Secretary discussed the issue of ‘restoration and rejuvenation of wetlands of Assam to enhance water retention capacity and mitigate risk of flooding and erosion’. The meeting approved the 16 DPRs (Detailed Project Reports) of the Water Resources Department for the restoration and rejuvenation of as many wetlands, amounting to Rs. 634.83 crore.

 The 16 wetlands are Mansiri wetland in the Sonitpur district, Morabharali wetland in the Sonitpur district, Nanai Beel for flood regulation of Baghjan river in the Jorhat district, Jelengitup Chinamornigarh wetland in the Jorhat district, Dorikamari wetland for flood regulation of River Bhogdoi in the Jorhat district, Kawoimari Beel in the Jorhat district, Ghuramora wetland in the Golaghat district, Sankar wetland in the Golaghat district, Mer-Kolaboria wetland in the Golaghat district, Borpak wetland in the Golaghat district, Fekalai wetland area in the Sivasagar district,  Maijan wetland upstream of Dibrugarh town, Vokoti wetland in the Majuli district, the wetland area near Gurungbasti at Sadiya in the Tinsukia district, Morisutitup Beel in the Morigaon district, and the Wetland area at Garjan in the Kamrup district.

Both the central and the state governments have an ambitious plan to retain flood water in the identified wetlands.
